Ineffective scareowl
How do you know your plastic owls aren’t doing their job?
When the birds use it as a perch.

Watch teh birdie
Love it when icanhascheezburger posts a lolbird. Here’s today’s funny:
I’m back!
I survived the road trip to Niagara Falls and two weeks of sightseeing & hanging out with the in-laws. They’re flying back to the Netherlands tonight and I’ll be back to regular posting here very soon. I didn’t get in too much birding in the last weeks but we did manage to get a couple of new yard birds and even a few lifers. Stay tuned!
Dove & kisses
Just a leetle peck on the cheek.
The Wingscapes cam caught this intimate moment between a very large Mourning Dove and a weensy House Finch.
So sleepy…
Mourning Doves are visiting our feeders on a regular basis now. I’ve set out our Wingscapes Birdcam a few times and it seems that every time it takes a picture of a Mourning Dove eating, it has its eyes closed. The other day I had the cam set to video and it seems that the doves take a long, pronounced blink every time they take a bite.
Often when I watch them sitting at the feeder, they seem to be in a trance or even sleeping; they will sit beside or on the food for minutes at a time, not moving. Why are Mourning Doves so sleepy? I guess mourning is an exhausting business.

Chopper Squirrel
Imagine that the corn-on-a-wire is attached to a helicopter. The lengths squirrels will go to…
I’m pretty sure these corn cobs were meant as squirrel food, but the caption makes this photo cute. Squirrel antics are fun to watch, though I’ve never really seen any go too far to get food. That’s okay – there are plenty of antics to see on YouTube. I like the sound effects on this one:
More anxious back yard birders
Sure, I bet they have some great birds in their yard! (I’ll stop whining now, I promise).
